IMAGINE
I imagine like me, you are guilty of occasionally holding onto things that don’t work. We hold onto thought patterns, relationships, identities, beliefs, weight, patterns of behavior. You name it. Sometimes, we literally hold onto physical things that don’t work.
I can’t imagine why!
BELIEVE
I can’t believe that for years, the piper and I held onto a can opener that didn’t work. A few weeks ago he cut himself wrestling with a can and yesterday I cut my finger trying to get a partially cut can all the way open. You can imagine what I’m talking about. There was that one tiny piece of metal that didn’t get cut. I had the bright idea to use a spoon. If I could just get the spoon to lift it up–I’d be grand! Uh, nope. As I pushed on the lid, I slipped and cut my finger.
It was humorous to admit we hadn’t taken the ten minute car ride to buy a $7 can opener that worked. Yesterday, we did. The new one is a champion! It cuts perfectly, no blood drawn, and it is even kind of pretty. I threw the old one out like a heroine in a movie. Byeeeee!
And, it is so silly! Are you guilty of this? If you are, you are not alone. Here’s your weekend reminder to let it go. You know what it is for you.
Are you a mean girl to your reflection? Stop that crap. Nice words only.
Are you putting off that exercise program? Not any more!
Are you listening to the news all the way to work? Rock out to some tunes.
Are you letting your phone rule your life? Not today!
Are you expecting that one person to change? Give it up already.
Are you following advice that isn’t meant for you? Tune into your wisdom.
DISCOVER
Something I’ve been doing is pushing myself to write directly on my computer. I know that writing in a journal first works better for me, but I’ve been worrying that it takes too long and I am not getting the pages done fast enough. (Newsflash, I’m not getting words out any faster forcing myself to sit in front of a screen.)
Today, I sat outside for two hours and wrote a chapter for the YA novel. Creativity flowed. Ideas came to me easily. Joy and Flow poured out in abundance. What a discovery! (That I already knew! Yah!)
I’m done trying to fit into a mold that isn’t me. I’m a journal girl and I write best when I’m in nature. What might we all discover if we let go of the things that don’t work?
What do you think? Have you ever held onto something silly like a can opener that didn’t work for far too long? I’d love to hear your stories of letting go of what doesn’t work.
xoxo
Shannon

I love the new can opener. What a great post today. Definitely letting go of stuff that just doesn't work for me. Sometimes it takes time to figure out what it is!
Shannon, love your post and all its great motivational questions and answers. “Tune into your wisdom. “ is my ultimate favorite and am always tuning in to what I need to let go of too. ☺️ lately it’s been about resetting my priorities and letting go of sweating the small stuff. 😇
